Letter B week. Blue Balloon painting with Blue, Black, & Brown paint on Blue paper. Making the sound Boing as we paint.
This week we are focusing on the letter A and the color Red. On Monday, we read the story, "Ten Red Apples" by Pat Hutchins. We took the story to another level. by adding props. The animals in the book, Farmer and his Wife, plus the Apples. As I read the story, I had each animal take a apple just like in the story. The children interacted by helping to tell the story. Every time an animal take a apple the Farmer says, "Save some for me." I love this story because it hits so many educational levels. Vocabulary, Colors, Mathematics, Counting backwards, One to One correspondence, Early Reading Skills, Science. Plus, doing it together as a class, everyone has a animal, social skills. having to wait for your animal to take the apple. I put the props on the table for the children to interact with the pieces. Let them retell the story their way. On Tuesday, we read, "Ten Apples up on Top" by Theo. LeSieg. Again, I have the children interact with tell the story, We count the apples as they go on the head. I have been reading this story for years with children. Every time, something new will happen. This time someone asked why the Tiger was sad? Talk about observation. After the story, we make pictures to go along with the story. We tried to see if we could balance apples on our head, No. The children who made the following pictures range in ages from 16 months, to almost 4 years of age. We counted the amount of apples that their people had on their head. Some where easier than others. When I choose a story to read at group time, I think of ways that I can have the children interact with the story. What questions can I ask them. How we can expand on the subject. Does it tie into what we are talking about or learning about? We enjoy reading books all day long. I love listening to the children retell the story. That is why we read, re-read, and re-read again. So the next time you pick up a book to read to a child, think about how you can bring that story to life. Spent morning making a play dough machine. Learning how to twist on off nuts. Learn terms like nut, bolt , screw, left, right, and more. Plus build a creative mind. |
